Stossel critquies government, media in Livonia

By Adam Paul on January 12th, 2008

Stossel adresses AFP seminar in Livonia

Senator John McCain and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney were the big draws for attendants at an Americans for Prosperity event in Lovonia today. Between the candidates ABC reporter John Stossel addressed the crowd. His statements today helped to contextualize the name of his long-running 20/20 segment “Give Me a Break.”

Stossel spoke against government regulations and subsidies. Stossel spokes about the massive rise in government since President Johnson’s Great Society. According to Stossel, government makes up about 40 percent of GDP today. Stossel challenged the idea that government agencies like the FDA do a good job of protecting us, pointing out that in the time it takes to get new drugs to market many people die from the causes such drugs are meant to prevent.

“Why can’t the FDA be volintary?” asked Stossel, saying that citizens could choice if they wanted to follow the FDA’s advice. Stossel critisied the media’s characterization of new drugs and technologies as well.

“Bad reporting has made Americans afraid of the innovation that has made their lives better,” said Stossel. Stossel asked people if they would be willing to have an odorless, invisible gas power their homes if it would reduce oil use, before explaining that natural gas does just that. “We accept coal and natural gas because they are old yet we are afraid of nuclear power.”

Stossel challenged the idea of the economy as a pie with large businesses taking an unfair share. “People like Bill Gates bake thousands of new pies,” said Stossel.

Duncan Hunter in Livonia

By Michael O'Brien on January 12th, 2008

Congressman Duncan Hunter addressed a media gaggle shortly before taking the stage today at the Americans for Prosperity “Defending the American Dream” summit, emphasizing the importance of preserving American industry, and hitting an ever-favorite target of his, the Chinese government.

Hunter, who has only $132 thousand in cash on hand as of the latest FEC numbers claimed he’s in the campaign through the end.

“I’ve got an awful lot in common with Michigan voters. They want to keep their jobs, and so do I,” Hunter said.

To that end, he called for what he calls “mirror trade.” That is, instituting matching retaliatory duties on foreign goods from countries who have tariffs, VAT taxes, or subsidies for products exported to America.

Again returning to China, he mentioned a seventeen percent VAT tax on Chinese goods exported to the United States that is then refunded to producers. He said that this tax, in combination with a seventeen percent tariff on American imports, results in an unfair playing field for American industry.

“That’s a 34 point spread, and the football game hasn’t started yet,” Hunter said.

Students Against Censorship

By Jonny Slemrod on January 10th, 2008

A well articulated letter to the editor from student James Janisse questions the Daily’s reporting, along with censorship. We need more outspoken voices like him.

“To the Daily:

I am writing in response to a crime note on Tuesday about the offensive words on the dry-erase board in the Mary Markley Residence Hall (Crime Notes, 01/08/2008). I am writing to correct the statement that the student whose door the words were written on complained. I am that student, and neither my roommate nor I reported anything. I am against the censoring of our freedom of speech and expression in most cases, including when speech is offensive.

Our freedom to speak and write should not be suppressed simply because something that is said is offensive. To do this sets a precedent that could open the floodgates on censorship because the definition of what is offensive is subjective and weak.

Furthermore, the written insult was a joke to my roommate from one of our hometown friends, not meant to be threatening in any way. If both my roommate and I were fine with it, why should we have been forced to erase it, let alone make our entire hall have a meeting with the Minority Peer Advisor? I doubt that if a person had a lawn sign that offended a neighbor they would be forced to remove it.

I suppose the situation is different because we are living in a dorm. But to make special restrictions on our Constitutional right to free speech because we are students is a scenario that harkens back to the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Tinker v Des Moines, where the high court sided with students’ First Amendment rights.

Though I hope nobody was offended by what was on my dry-erase board, I don’t support the strict regulation of what was written even if someone was offended. I just cannot bring myself to agree to such a denial of personal liberty.
James Janisse, LSA freshman”

Students Dissent on Gradution

By Adam Paul on January 10th, 2008

Moves by students to resist the move of spring commencement from Michigan Stadium to EMU’s stadium are coming in from every direction now.

Three members of MSA, Gibran Baydoun, Stella Binkevich, and Nate Fink, along with one former MSA member Jen Hsu, wrote a letter to the Michigan Daily today and have started an online petition. The petition asks students to:

Sign this petition if you believe that the University needs to revisit all options regarding the location of the 2008 Spring Commencement ceremony.

The Daily also ran viewpoints by editorial board member Kate Truesdell and Juhi Aggarwal, founder of the blog Michigan Graduation…Not at the Big House?

One of the more virulent letters today was posted not in the paper but on that blog. The letter written by seniors Robert Gassior, Michael Radtke jr, and Kelly Wang concludes that:

We have worked four hard years toward our diploma and it is our time to shine at the Big House. The Michigan Difference is in our hands and we will not allow it to be compromised.

The final sentence should not be missed since it likely alludes to this decision’s impact on the graduating classes role in the Michigan Difference campaign, the University’s current fund raising drive.

Detroit strikes gold, again

By Brian on January 6th, 2008

Downtown Detroit will receive a landmark, post-modern residential high-rise and mixed-use (shopping and entertainment) complex on a prominent site, the Free Press is reporting today. Besides furthering the infill and upbuilding of the downtown, the Cadillac Centredevelopment is completely privately funded, a sure sign of the viability of investment in the City.

Northern Group Inc., of New York City, will build and own the $150 million building. Its principal and managing partner, Alex Dembitzer, has a 20-year history of developing and managing projects often considered daring. The company invests worldwide, particularly in Israel, Europe and major American cities; all told, Dembitzer is responsible for10 million square feet of commercial real estate and 5,000 apartment units.

The prominent attention that Detroit is now receiving from outsiders, and the vote of confidence that this development demonstrates, is notable.

“We believe in the future of Detroit,” Dembitzer told theFree Press. “We are creating a unique complex that will not only revitalize downtown Detroit living, shopping and entertainment, but will also stir the imagination and excitement about Detroit’s future and what we believe it will become in the 21st Century.”

Dembitzer is no stranger to Detroit. His company owns three prominent, historic downtown office towers all within blocks of the Monroe Block development site.

In late 2007, Quicken Loans announced its intent to develop a new headquarters in Detroit, bringing at least 4,000 workers downtown, and pledging to encourage other suburban Detroit companies to relocate in the City. Quicken had to be enticed by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and others, though. Other developments, like the Westin Book-Cadillac hotel renovation and a host of smaller developments, required publicly-backed loans. No such tax abatements or other incentives are at hand with this aggressive development which,is planned to display an extremely aggressive design and achieve landmark status much like the city’s Renaissance Center. Funding is already completely arranged, according to Dembitzer.

The complex will alsofeature a “living” or “green”roof that would collect and filter rain water andlower energy consumption.

Higher Gas Tax?

By Jonny Slemrod on January 6th, 2008

Rumor has been spreading about the possibility that Governor Jennifer Granholm will raise the state’s gas tax to help pay for “transportation needs.” Reports the Times Herald,

“The state Department of Transportation’s multi-billion dollar budget isn’t enough to maintain the state’s roads at their current condition, and Sen. Jud Gilbert, R-Algonac, wants solutions.

Recently, Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a bill Gilbert sponsored last year that will create a task force and citizen advisory committee charged with proposing alternative revenue sources to pay for the state’s transportation needs.”

The situation will be interesting since the Governor verbally state that she will not raise taxes after Michigan’s legislature raised income and sales taxes to close a $1 billion deficit and avert a government shutdown in October. According to the Tax Foundation, a nonparstian Washington-based think tank, state and federal gas taxes amount to $52.4 cents per gallon in Michigan, making it the fifth highest gas tax in the country. It will be interesting to see how citizens respond to an increase if Granholm decides to take a chance.

Caucuses Tonight Offer Preview of Michigan Primary

By Michael O'Brien on January 3rd, 2008

Tonight, as Iowans go to caucus, deciding which delegates to devote to which candidates on the Republican and Democratic sides. It marks the first official vote in the U.S. Presidential campaign after more than a year of stories and bickering.

Most importantly for U-M students, though, will be the way Iowa, and eventually New Hampshire, will set the tone for the Republican primary in Michigan. Some key questions:

–If Romney scores a decisive win, and moves onto another victory in New Hampshire, is a Romney nomination inevitable?
–Will the so-called McCain surge be validated or smacked down in Iowa tonight?
–If dark horse candidate Mike Huckabee pulls off the upset in Iowa tonight, can that translate to further momentum in states like Michigan, where he has virtually no ground organization?
–What sort of numbers will Rudy Giuliani need to maintain signs of life until the Florida primary, which is when his campaign maintains their candidate will take off?
–If Fred Thompson doesn’t finish well, and drops out to endorse John McCain (as Jonathan Martin has said over at Politico.com), will that add to McCain momentum that could carry over to January 15?

We’ll be checking in tonight and the next few days, hopefully with some answers. More importantly, though, look for The Michigan Review’s special election issue on newsstands across campus next week, in anticipation of the January 15 Michigan Republican primary.

MSU, not U-M, takes honor from the Chinese

By Adam Paul on January 3rd, 2008

Despite devoting an entire theme year, themes usually last only one semester, to connecting students to China, it was in-state rival Michigan State University that took honors from the Chinese government this week.

The Detroit News reported today that MSU’s Confucius Institute received The Confucius Institute of the Year award from the Chinese Language Council International (a branch of the Chinese government) in Bejeing earlier this month.

Unlike U-M’s theme semester, which has included speeches by the Chinese ambassador to the US and special classes in disciplines from language, history, and political science among others, MSU’s program presents opportunities for high schoolers to learn Chinese online.
