Constituton Day, Did you Miss it?

By Adam Paul on September 18th, 2007

Today, September 17th was Constitution Day. A holiday set by the federal government to celebrate the US Constitution. In 2005, the Depratment of Education urged all schools receiving federal aid to celebrate the holiday. While the University is not part of that mandate and therefore not required to celebrate the day. While I have never had much love for federally mandated holidays, I have to give some credit to this one.

Since I doubt that most students carry a pocket Constituion around in their backpack (yes, I do, thank you), few students likely interacted with the document today. So as a shout-out to our Founding Fathers, I am placing below the amendment that ensures the independence of this blog and all those like it. Just food for thought.

Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Does Loving Trees mean Hating Babies?

By Adam Paul on September 18th, 2007

Human beings, especially those in developed countries, use energy and can damage the environment. In his new book, The World Without US, author Alan Wesiman proposes a bold solution: just have less babies. While Weismen does not embrace the fatalistic view of the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement (I cannot make this stuff up) he recommends that couples move to having only one child.

He acknowledges that this level is below the rate of 2.1 children that allows a couple to replace itself (the extra .1 accounts for child mortality). In fact, he wants to see world population diminish.

Rhetoric surrounding population has often been levied against developing countries, where high birth rates are seen as perpetuating poverty and t he exploitation of natural resources.

Weisman’s book differs in that if focuses on developed countries, where fertility rates are already low. In fact, some European countries are already near the one child per couple policy that Weisman proposes. Data from the World Bank, accesses Germany to have had only .3 percent annual population growth over 1990-2005 and predicts the country will actually shrink .1 percent annually from 2005-2015. The US at least sees growth with rates of 1.1 and .8 over the same periods.

Moreover, since it’s release the book has seen popularity. Spending eight weeks on the NYT best seller list, falling in at number 7 at the time of writing.

While looking at babies from a social impact standpoint is nothing new, (Milton Friedman once called children “rational beings en utero”) playing environmental cost calculus with birth rates just doesn’t work.

As Daniel Engber points out in a recent article for Slate.com, Weisman turns off many. “The anti-life implications of Weisman’s book are likely to alienate some moderates.” Still, Engber is able to sync Weisman’s points with pop, consumer environmental chic.

“Whether it’s eating vegetarian or wearing organic eye shadow, we’re all shopping for absolution. We know that babies add more to global warming more than anything else in our home. Isn’t it time to cut back?”

No, because children are not the equivalent of a Hummer, to be discarded when fashion puts them on the outs. If future generations are perceived as a threat to the environment, then why save the planet at all, who’s going to be around to enjoy it?

It seems we have gone from the old faith of “be fruitful and multiply” to the dogmatic enviromentalism of “planet at all costs.”
