April Fool’s jokes rarely play out well. That said, two bloggers managed to get out well-placed jokes this morning.
Local blogger Johnny Quest posted on the UM College OTR site that graduation would be taking place at the Big House after all. Quest attributed his post to a Michigan Daily story on the subject; no such story exists.
The humorous Stuff White People Like produced a mock press release saying that the blog had been bought by Target. The blog had recently listed Target as one of its items that “white people like.”

Texting while driving is now a crime, at least in the city of Detroit. City Council approved today a law that would make texting, reading, applying make-up or “other distracting behavior” cause for a ticket, according to the Detroit Free Press. The law only makes the crime a secondary offense meaning that a driver would have to be pulled over for another offense, such as speeding, and could not be stopped just for texting.
The law is intended to cut down on accidents in the city.
While the law may save a few UM students from regrettable texting decisions, it comes too late to save Mayor Kilpatrick from a string of scandalous text messages.

I story chronicling the history of U-M hockey’s Yost Ice Arena appeared in today’s USA Today. Of greatest interest to regular U-M hockey fans will likely be a series of comments by coach Berenson and senior player Chad Kolarik about the appropriateness of U-M’s wide range of often provocative hockey chants.
An article in today’s New York Times may help explain why Ann Arbor attracts so many New Yorkers. The article discusses new efforts by SUNY (State University of New York) schools to increase their national prominence and their struggles to do so.
A large campaign at SUNY Buffalo seems to be having some positive effects but as the article explains:
“But even its national reputation, buzz and research dollars put it nowhere near the ranks of the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.”

In case anyone was wondering why the Michigan Daily is sporting Venn Diagrams (including one that asserts that the interaction of “freezing cold” and “Finals” is “Sex in the Grad”) on page 3 of today’s B-side, please know that diagrams done right can be funny.
The Daily’s model follows the tradition of blogger Jessica Hagy, whose Indexed blog, uses graphs and diagrams drawn on index cards to make comedic commentary. Her humorous drawing have won her the priase from the Freakomoics blog of Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt over at the NYTimes.

Well now you can own four of them in Ann Arbor all at once. According to today’s Ann Arbor News, the Cavern Club Complex on First St. is up for sale. The four bar complex includes the Cavern Club, the Millennium Club, Gotham City, and Circus.
Sadly, with a $6,875,000 price tag most students are probably out of the market to grab the property.

Remember last year when the a computer was stolen from a Veterans Affairs analyst and it had all that information including veterans on it? Well, now thanks to a misdirected e-mail form staff at Pittsberg’s Duquesne University, students don’t even have to steal others personal information; it’s just sent to them.

It seems that everyone is addicted to Facebook these days. According to a story by John Schwartz in today’s New York Times, 40 percent of Facebook users are now over the age of 25. While that’s not entirely surprising if you consider that people who were seniors four years ago, when some of us were freshman, are likely to be over 25 now.
The interesting thing about the Times story is how it wants to characterize the different ways that older people will use Facebook. It gives the example of a mother in her fourties who used Facebook to find students to speak to groups about their struggles with mental illness. The article seems to miss that young people are already using Facebook to organize political rallies, bring people to speeches, and do charity work (a la Dance Marathon or the Detroit Project). Nor do I think that everyone out of college is logging on to Facebook to save their community, some of them just want to waste time with the rest of us.
In a recent issue of the New York Times magazine Rick Perlstein argued that the modern American college just doesn’t captivate national attention the way students did in the sixties. Maybe that’s true, but if older Americans are increasingly interacting in ways that young people invent, maybe our role is bigger, but just less overt, than many would like to recognize.

An article on the front page of today’s Michigan Daily, describes the rise in incidents- measured in the numbers of arrests, citations, and ejections reported by DPS at home football games this year over a similar period last year. Yet this fact, which is noteworthy, ran as the subhead for the story. Instead the headline read, “Rowdiness on rise at the Big House.”
Using the number of DPS incidents is an incomplete and very rough measure of rowdiness. In the article DPS spokeswoman asserts that DPS has not changed its approach to stadium security in recent years, implying that the rise in incidents does not represent a crackdown on previously uncaught crimes but instead a spree of debauchery by students.
At the same time, the article indicates that later games and good weather may be inducing changes in student behavior. But these exogenous changes are also likely to have an impact on DPS’s response. Do the same officers take later shits as those at earlier games? Does good weather make it easier to spot student offenders?
It is also important to note that DPS is not the only agency that impacts the number of incidents that occur at any given game. The Big House also employs a number of ushers. Given that around five of these guys spent about 15 minutes seeking out “Hot Dog Man” to toss him out after he handed, mostly not throwing but actually handing-out, hot dogs at last weekend’s game, this group may actually be initiating a greater number of incidents.
True others have noted a change in the intensity of students lately. In a recent post, I noted an Ann Arbor News article that quoted older season ticket holders upset with student “rowdiness.” Yet even this may have less to do with any real rise in provocation and instead represent the fact that the U has chosen to seat some students outside the student section and closer to other attendees who have a lower tolerance for student antics.
None of this is to discredit the facts of the Daily’s report but all to indicate that rowdiness is a poor way to characterize the article given the multitude of factors that could actually be driving the increase in DPS incidents.

In an article in today’s Detroit News, U-M’s “you suck” chant gets brief mention for contributing to one season ticket-holder to give up his seats. It seems that our “profane” chants are just too much for some fans. The bulk of the article then goes on to criticize MSU for their chants.
I understand, as one anecdote in story mentions, not wanting to expose your young children to profanity but does anyone expect to get through a college football game without some profane language, vulgar gestures, or other debauchery?
